If you believe in the importance of the Las Vegas entertainment community, you attend anniversary celebrations of shows here with a great sense of pride. It ain’t easy of course to have a hit show in this town.
For the past five years, the swinging and joyous “All Motown” revue at the Alexis Park Resort Hotel has been pulling in crowds who want to revel in the ‘60s and ‘70s music of Motown—one of pop’s most glorious periods when Black Americans impacted and uplifted the mainstream with one unforgettable hit single after another.
Tonight, it was time to salute the fifth anniversary of the nightly show, which Executive Producer Pete Housley launched during the early/scary days of Covid. Notably, Sherry Gordy—the daughter of legendary Motown founder Berry Gordy—was on hand in the intimate showroom that’s framed with eye-catching red leather booths from the old Tropicana Hotel. Also in the audience were previous cast members who’ve helped make “All Motown” a success through the years.

The all-female group called “The Duchesses of Motown” hit all the sweet spots with effervescent vocal harmonies sung over pre-recorded tracks, along with their smooth choreography and sparkling costumes. It’s just what the doctor ordered in these alarmingly uncertain times.
Who knew that I would be surprise-called on by the Duchesses to dance as “Bill” at the foot of the stage during their performance of “Don’t Mess With Bill” by the wonderful Marvelettes (written by the great Smokey Robinson)? I couldn’t resist busting out some dance moves I learned growing up in NYC, where the music of Motown blasted out of radios everywhere.
