Las Vegas Mixtape v49: Culinary Smarts, a Motown Party, and more!

Track #5 (of 5): Around Town Medley:

The UK’s influential Simon Marlin (also known as Shapeshifters) ruled the rooftop of Commonwealth. (Image: Vegas 411)

“Release all the pressure,” to quote a lyric from “Take Me Up,” one of the house music tracks that lit up a brilliantly pumping set by the UK’s influential The Shapeshifters (Simon Marlin). On a gorgeous, warm Thursday night, it was possible to temporarily forget the world’s ills on the rooftop of the two-level club Commonwealth at the corner of 6th Street and Fremont Street East. Hats off to the discerning folks at Corner Bar Management for lassoing Shapeshifters, whose red-hot set hit my disco sweet spot, particularly when Marlin rolled out a remix of “Love Thang” by the legendary first-wave disco girl group First Choice.

Between the music, dance floor ecstasy, and vintage Vegas views (including the dazzlingly iconic El Cortez Hotel signage), this is one of the city’s essential night spots. Tucked away inside is the venue’s buzzy speakeasy The Laundry Room. Corner Bar Management is also behind the always percolating venues Discopussy, We All Scream, and Cheapshot on the same street, not to mention the edgy, sophisticated Doberman Drawing Room in the Arts District, which encourages their guests, on Mondays to bring along board games including backgammon, chess and mahjong.

It’s easy to fall in love with mulitas. (Image: Vegas 411)

Have you ever tried a mulita? Head to 24/7 fast-casual Casa del Sabor at Sahara and Rainbow to taste the charms of this street-style mashup of a quesadilla and taco. It's made with two crispy corn tortillas, stuffed with meat and melted cheese—and don’t forget to top it with the salsa verde, onions, and cilantro they give you on the side. I’m also recommending their huaraches; they’re an open-faced delight served on thick masa with a layer of refried beans, meat, crumbled cheese, and sour cream. It’s always bustling when I stop here and there are plenty of tables inside and a few outside too. Bonus point:  they play high-energy house music, with songs in both English and Spanish, on the sound system.
